A Fateful Photograph

A Fateful Photograph

Posters defaced by dissenters in East Berlin, 1959. Among the missing faces are those of Ulbricht and Krushchev. The regime refused to admit the existence of dissent, and photographs such as this one led to Helwig-Wilson’s arrest and conviction for “spying.”
