An Uncomfortable Memorial

This forest of black crosses, a memorial to the more than 1,000 people killed at the Berlin Wall and the inner-German border, didn’t fit the image of “nice” things local politicians wanted tourists to see. It was erected in 2004 and pulled down by court order in 2005.
